A Cheesy Religion

Part One

(A short story by Steven R. Harrel)

Dusk settles over the sleepy little western town of Williams, Arizona; light fades as a cold northerly sweeping down Billy William’s Mountain bringing a chill to the already cool night air.

Dr. Frederick Anderson, family physician and friend, shares the long awaited test results in whispered tones, “The prognosis is grim, Nancy.” Continue reading →

Temple of the Soul

In the temple of our human souls stands an altar of solid unblemished gold

Where polished and burnished, flawless and without seams,

Our hearts are revealed both young and old while living out illusionary themes,

And though without question our hearts are not empty,

They are filled with visions of our deeds, our lives, our desires of flesh.

Yet our living souls in perfect image – where no other can truly read – nor gaze.

It is a place of grand communion – a temple impossible for another soul to brave.

Neither father nor mother nor lover or friend can share this great chasm

Or its unobtainable great seat,

For only Jesus our Savior, Jesus our friend can commune with our soul in our lives without end.

This unique human place where God and human soul can chance meet,

Where God can become friend and our soul He can mend,

Beyond treasure, beyond prize in our short diminutive lives,

Christ abiding in the Temple of our Souls as Bridegroom with Bride,

Friend and befriended, alive and ever alive.

Choose Your Companions Well

I’ve been married for more than 40 years and have grown through many echoes of life, especially as a married man.

Sometimes you just have to laugh through the pain because the joy of marriage is on the other side of the table from you.

Crossing the line

I was laughing through my tears,

From a distance I drew you near.

Though I hate and love you so;

Please just stay when you should go.

By Steven R. Harrel 6/6/2014

IN 1977 the Lord spoke to me when I was posted at Fort Hood, Texas and told me to return to Phoenix where I would find Pam.  The Lord told me to remove any and all obstacles and marry that sometimes annoying woman.

I can’t say I’ve always been glad she listened that day but I’m always glad I listened.

Marriage, like life is a journey.  Choose your companions well.

The Beauty of My Woman

The beauty of my woman is found not in the fit of her clothes, nor the application of her cosmetics.

It matters not how plaited her hair or the fall of it upon her shoulders

Neither does the color of her hair matter, nor the smoothness of her beautiful skin.

All these fail to show the real beauty of who she has become to me. Continue reading →

A February Prayer

Hey Whirlwind Fans, this is simply a prayer I offered on February 26th 2019 because I was feeling moved by the Holy Spirit as a sense of His love flowed through my spirit.

How much more blessed can a people be than to actually feel the loving presence of their God!

So here’s the prayer:

Stars fill the heavens and streak across the night’s sky.

Brilliant and glorious light bathes our world every day in life warming beauty.

Then there’s that first cry of a newborn child

The first tears from a beloved

Laughter at a distance – listening to such delight in those we love.

Ephemeral Senectitude

Days of pastel blues and lusterless reds could fill the inevasible blind pages to come.  I have seen the splendor of my own antecedence, or rather the privation there of.  Once bound in a twirl of youthful folly now I marvel, can they not see?  I think they too, as I once, choose drunkenly, willfully to be ensnared by the false comfort of never‑ending youth; the pervasive, there will be time.

Though I have traveled many roads and stumbled on paths bleak, yet onward I plod; defiant, I stand in the face of waning possibilities.  Though it may seem as brackish waters to the weak of spirit, nevertheless, I thrive.  I have decided to dominate that which lies waste.  Failure, you shall not take me!

I swim in a sea of spring-tide, the deep brims with life about me, yet I find Continue reading →

Ever endure and never give up!

Eternal Hope

Decades passed entrenched in great, deep abiding hope

In joy of life we danced and sang and loved and drank in life’s inordinate soul

Valiantly I fought to keep the love of life alive

Alas alone my partner drank my strength till hope did die

Yet on I plod, in endless hope to find again that spring

But I had not a partner true to save me when I screamed:

Help, save me, catch me quick for in the mire I sink

For hope long lost can drag one down beneath the hopeful spring.

For abides the endless depth of never ending hope

From fools who plod alone until hope has drowned their soul.

Then from said soul the spring of hope is fed so others stride

Until they feed eternal hope until they too do stride.

Time A Wasted

Oh folly of man, oh arrogance of my kindred, whilst thou would not humblest thyself in the knowledge of thy God and recognize His greatness amidst the bottomless quality of thy immeasurable comparative insignificance, others accomplish His will whilst thy bosom remains empty.

Creation, From The Heart, Love, Steven R. Harrel for This Side of the Whirlwind

Him

His eyes never blinking

His tears bring the rains,

His image ever growing in love, knowledge and change.

Time without ending, His creation fraught with pain;

Then with love overflowing in a world He made with joy

His grace it keeps and keeps on going to His glorious evermore.
