The idea is for you to memorize the following memory verse and then (If you like) to learn a little more about the section as you see fit. I actually love this section of scripture for it brings me much strength. Enjoy!

Level 3 Memory Verse

  1. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
  2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
  3. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God accomplished by sending His own Son in the form of sinful flesh, reconciling sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,
  4. That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the (Holy) Spirit. (Romans 8:1-4 NKJV)

Here is a invaluable section of Bible verses to memorize.

Todays Devotional will be (MY) breaking down ‘verse 1’ of this most crucial section of text.  Simply put: it is how the following verses impacted and continues to impact my life.

In the previous chapter, Romans 7:14-25, the text teaches us that everyone (including the great Saul who became Paul) is subject to sin and its nature within the human and the human-condition.  We further recognize that evil is present in us even when we desire to do good.  Of course, we know this was by design.

IN chapter 7 Paul conveys how glad he is to have Jesus, the Son of God, pay his our sin debt; of this I am agreed.

Paul notes, that with our minds and souls we serve God by desire and will and intent…

However, with our flesh we often continue to mess-up and serve the law of sin, because of our flesh.

Of course, we all know “The wages of sin is death AND GLORIOUSLY the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord!”

And this is where Romans chapter eight verse one picks up with – There is therefore… SO!

  1. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
  2. By writing: There is therefore, Paul means to say – because of Jesus’ payment for our sin (Daniel 9:24 & John 3:16 and 36) There is therefore the following effect.
  3. There is therefore – for this reason – NOW – no condemnation, no judgment or wages of sin to pay BECAUSE Jesus paid them…
  4. FOR those (for us) who are in Christ Jesus: FOR US who are Saved by the shed blood of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross (Hebrews 9:22)
  5. Therefore – FOR US – Who do not walk according to the flesh: you know… those who do not live IN SIN as though they are without Jesus as their Lord and Savior (Living like the unsaved as we were before).
  6. but according to the (Holy) Spirit: RATHER, that we should live our lives according to God’s Word – truly trying to live Christian lives.
  • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

I love this verse.

  • The Law of the Holy Spirit has subsections. In the case of Romans 8:2, “The Law of the Holy Spirit” presents a subsection titled, Life in Christ Jesus which provides a stipulation for those who are saved: For everyone saved by the blood of the Lamb; saved by Jesus’ propitiation –  they, we have been SET FREE from the Law of Sin and Death.
    • The Law of Sin and Death required everyone who committed even one sin to die the death of separation from God and to be sent eternally into a place known as outer darkness or Hell.  That is rather permanent, ouch!

You see the Law of Sin and Death was by design a tutor or School Master designed to teach and prove to the world that no one could live a perfect and sinless life outside of God’s free gift of salvation thru His Son Jesus. Again, this was by design.

  •  For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God accomplished by sending His own Son in the form of sinful flesh, reconciling sin: condemning sin in the flesh,
    • Jesus, the only begotten Son of God was able to do what normal humans could not and live a sin free life and was therefore the perfect Lamb of God for pacifying the Law of Sin and Death.
  • That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the (Holy) Spirit (Romans 8:1-4 NKJV).

By Jesus’ life, death and resurrection we too can be raised up into heavenly places as Sons and Daughters of God (Colossians 1:14-27).

Saved by grace thru faith so that Jesus can and does present us holy, unblameable and unpunishable in the eyes of God, His Father.  Go Jesus!
