Self-Reflection — Say What!

Can you see yourself?

Self-Reflection… too often we see the failings of others without seeing the same failings within our own lives.

Too often we say things, do things or act in haste or with selfish motivations and then blame others for the outcomes resulting from those things we’ve said, done or acted upon.

What is the mechanism within us that deflects our own personal responsibility for our own choices; things we’ve said, deeds we’ve done or actions we’ve rendered?

Are you talking to me?

Why do we find it so hard to admit when we have done evil, selfish or willful acts?

Is it cowardice – in this instance – the lack of ability or courage to see one’s self honestly?

Why must we blame others for when we have voiced hateful remarks? “Oh, they made me say it!”  Own up!  You said it from your own heart and as we know, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.  That means you said it because your heart agreed with it.

Why do we explain away our actions when we would not tolerate similar behavior from another?  Where is our general since of fairness?

I didn’t do it!

Christians… All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23 NKJV).

“All,” yep, right, yep again – that’s you and me.

There is no shame in being human.

It is human to be human.

We know we can be just and true to others and ourselves.

I bring this up because I have recently encountered an exceedingly racist and hate filled individual who cannot seem to hear his own words or take responsibility for spurring others to violent actions. He sows hatred and

violence while claiming he wants a better world for ‘his’ people.

Though there are corners of the world and countries where ignorance sadly prevails, the majority of the United States of America – is not racist or hateful.  I know what the Media says and think they are simply serving THEIR agenda at our expense. Still, this individual of which I speak fails to see that we are all his people [We Are All His People] when we choose to live in peace and render mutual respect.  We can be there for each other and serve one another while serving our own lives too.

You mean like this?

Have you NOT noticed – – – there are none so blind as those who WILL NOT see.

  1. Those who refuse to take responsibility for their own actions.
  2. Those who will not LISTEN to their own words.
  3. Those who deny the harm done by their own petty hatreds and prejudices.
  4. Those who fail to recognize the failings of racism.

People who fail to learn from their own mistakes are exceedingly ‘likely’ to perpetuate those same failing for a lifetime.    How sad and unnecessary it that?

The answer to this equation is to reflect upon our own actions or inaction first and then take responsibility for what we’ve said, done or acted out.

Hey Christians… stop blaming others when you act out in anger, bitterness, hopelessness, fear etcetera.

I did it!

Stop passing the buck.

You said it.

You did it.

You meant it!  OWN IT!

Not everything we do is good or selfless. Of course not, we are human and saved by grace through faith so that none could boast their goodness.

You know – “Grace” that undeserved mercy given by our Creator. Thank you Lord!

Remember 1 John 1:8-10:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Let’s remember to be humble too.  Seek forgiveness from those we’ve harmed, insulted or just been unkind to.  Be just to others with the same level of justice or measure of kindness you would like.

(The list of possible verses are just too numerous)

God bless you and have a great day – – – and of course, be kind!
